Sunak and the single market: proof that Brexit is absurd

Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, admitted today that Northern Ireland is in a better position than the rest of the UK by having unique access to both the EU Single Market and the UK market.

He excitedly told workers at the Coca-Cola plant in Co Antrim that this made Northern Ireland, ‘The world’s most exciting economic zone.’ Mr Sunak said that if the new Windsor deal for Northern Ireland and the EU is implemented, then the province

‘is in the unbelievably, special position, unique position, in the entire world, European continent, in having privileged access, not just to the UK home market, which is enormous, fifth biggest in the world, but also the European Union Single Market.’

And the Prime Minister eagerly pointed out,

‘Nobody else has that. No one. Only you guys, only here.” He added, “That’s like the world’s most exciting economic zone.’

Mr Sunak enthusiastically pressed home,

‘The Republic of Ireland doesn’t have that’.

AND NOR DO ENGLAND, SCOTLAND OR WALES!

It’s the “special thing” that is only in Northern Ireland, Mr Sunak said the unique position of Northern Ireland, having privileged access to both the EU Single Market and the UK home market, meant that companies were queuing up to invest in Northern Ireland, especially from the USA.

But the question Rishi Sunak didn’t answer: why can’t the rest of the UK have the same wonderful, special advantages that Northern Ireland has of enjoying privileged access to both the EU and UK markets?

Increasingly, Brexit makes zero sense. Except for Northern Ireland, the UK is in the unique position of having a truly rotten Brexit, that isn’t wonderful or special at all.

And it stinks, don’t you think?
