The ‘People’s Emergency Briefing’ Wimborne, June 26

People’s Emergency Briefings across the UK

The UK experienced its wettest winter in over a century in 2023–24. Scientists described it as a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change, which continued in the wet winter of 2025-26.

On Thursday 26 June, Extinction Rebellion Wimborne will be hosting a free public screening of ‘The People’s Emergency Briefing’ at the Allendale Community Theatre in Wimborne. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start, and the film will be followed by a facilitated community discussion.

As one of the organisers, I believe this is an important opportunity for local people to come together and engage with the evidence about the climate and nature crises and to discuss what these challenges could mean for our community here in East Dorset.

The film has its roots in the National Emergency Briefing held at Westminster Central Hall in November 2024 where more than 1200 MPs, peers, business leaders, faith leaders and cultural figures gathered to hear from leading experts about the risks facing the UK from climate and nature breakdown.

Introduced by Chris Packham CBE, the briefing examined the implications for food security, public health, infrastructure, the economy and national security, while also outlining practical, evidence-based actions that could reduce those risks.

That national event has now been adapted into a powerful 50-minute film, ‘The People’s Emergency Briefing’, which has been screened in communities across the country since its launch in April.

What I particularly value about the film is that it does more than present the facts. It creates space for people to reflect on what these issues mean where they live, to share concerns and experiences and to consider how communities can support elected representatives in calling for stronger action.

Chris Packham has encouraged people to attend local screenings, saying:

“I’d encourage people everywhere to attend a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing. It creates exactly the kind of honest local conversation we now urgently need, both about what these changes mean where we live and about what we can do together to address them.”

Here in Wimborne, those conversations feel especially relevant. Earlier this year, many residents and businesses experienced disruption from severe flooding following prolonged periods of torrential rain. Scientists are clear that climate change is increasing the likelihood and intensity of extreme weather events, making communities like ours more vulnerable.

This event is intended as a civic space where residents, community leaders and decision makers can come together to discuss these issues openly and respectfully. We have invited local MPs, councillors and other influential figures to attend and participate in the discussion.

For me, this is not about telling people what to think. It is about creating space for people to look at the evidence, ask questions and begin an informed conversation about what climate and nature breakdown means for our community, and how we can support the bolder action that scientists say is now needed.

Tickets are free, although advance booking is encouraged.
